PSH’s Summer Demonstration Day

30/07/2024

On the 23rd and 24th of July, we held our first demonstration day to invite industry professionals and customers to the PSH site. With blazing sunshine and a van to offer tasty food and refreshments, we’re happy to say the event was a roaring success.

What we did

Our tour started at our lagoon, constructed to capture falling rainwater from the site. After just a year, it’s brimming with aquatic wildlife, and fauna growing within the water helps remove pollutants from the atmosphere.

After a chat with our visitors, we set off to showcase the famous UNTHA shredder. They got the chance to see the machine in action, shredding up to one tonne of wood in just three minutes. This state-of-the-art device is capable of extracting scrap metal from wood pieces that would otherwise be deemed as non-recyclable. To top it off, the machine is entirely powered by solar energy, reducing our carbon emissions significantly.

Investing in the shredder was a pivotal moment for PSH’s operations, as it meant we could complete the entire waste management process on-site rather than shipping off wood to be processed elsewhere. The process has enabled us to greatly reduce our fossil fuel usage and divert the shredded product to be converted into biomass.

Our next stop was the general waste facility, where another bespoke shredder refines our operations. After shredding, domestic waste is packed tightly, wrapped in cellophane and transported to continental Europe, where it is converted into Refuse Derived Fuel. This unique method has allowed us to recover materials that are often deemed as non-recyclable, and we were keen to show our visitors the living proof of our ‘0% waste to landfill’ promise.

Next up was a whistle-stop tour of the solar base of operations. Our solar panel connoisseur, Luke Bradford, Director of AM Electrics, explained how we generate solar energy for the site and direct it to machinery. We discussed how producing our power on-site greatly reduces our reliance on the grid, and as a result, significantly reduces carbon emissions. Our 798 solar panels can be monitored on an impressive system where staff are easily able to view live power production, solar usage, and grid usage via mobile app.

The last stop showed everyone the nitty gritty, where waste is manually sorted in our facility. Not everything can be done with machinery, so we go the extra mile by meticulously separating waste to reuse metals, plasterboard, cardboard, UPVC, aggregates and other materials. It’s not easy work, but we do the best we can to be environmentally conscious as a company in the waste industry, and we’re continuously looking for new ways to innovate our processes.

What people said

It seems that our guests were wowed by what they saw, and we thought it was important to show them what goes on behind the scenes after they pop their waste into a skip.

“The PSH site is clean as a pin. You’d assume that a waste centre would be smelly and full of mess, but the staff really seem to be on the ball with keeping everything organised. It’s also nice to turn up to a site that hasn’t got a big pile of trash ready to ship off to landfill.” said one existing customer.

“There’s so much thought that goes into everything that they do. I never knew that the waste sorting process was so meticulous.’ said another.

Overall, it was great to give our guests a glimpse of PSH operations and prove that our passion for caring about the environment has a strong impact on our waste sorting process.

Why was the day important?

At PSH, we’re always on a mission to improve our environmental impact and inspire others to strive for more green working practices. We wanted to share and learn from experiences with others in the industry, helping us to continue refining what we do.

It was also important for us to dispel common misconceptions about waste sites being smelly and dirty, or making empty promises about where our waste goes. This event allowed us to show that we really go the extra mile to recycle or recover 100% of materials on site.
