Hiring The Right Skip For Your Project

14/01/2025

Happy New Year, everyone. We hope you had a fantastic holiday and are ready to tackle the upcoming year.

January brings with it the perfect opportunity to get motivated, whether that be with new career goals, a growing bucket list, or a property makeover. While we can’t help with securing you a promotion or finally getting you on that life-changing trip to Japan, we can definitely support your property renovation ideas.

Here at PSH, we have a wide range of skips available to hire to help you with the clean up of your new year project. From a bathroom refit to an entire office floor renovation, we have the right size to suit your requirements. In this post, we’ll go through which sizes we offer, what they’re good for, and what you can and can’t dispose of in our skips.

Hiring the right skip for your project

First, consider the scale of the project. Are you pulling out your outdated shower and installing a new claw-footed bath? Renovating an entire office to take the space into the modern day? The size of the project and the amount of waste it produces, alongside the weight and size of the waste, will dictate which skip you need to hire.

Which skip do I need?

At PSH, we offer eight different skip sizes to suit your project or job site.

2 yard skip

The smallest of our range, the 2 yard skip, is best for minimal amounts of waste. This skip would be ideal for a small garden refresh or if your home needs a spring clean of old appliances and items. Think of it as a very large bin, except the waste within will be efficiently recycled instead of taken to landfill and left to pollute. Its size also makes it ideal for compact spaces, such as small apartments or confined gardens.

4 yard skip

This midi skip is ideal for home projects. Whether landscaping, DIY, or a smaller renovation, the 4 yard skip is perfect for loading up with house waste and materials. There is no weight restriction on this skip, so you can fill it with heavy materials such as bricks and rubble for no extra cost. For simple access, this skip has a drop-down door, making cleaning up after your project even easier.

6 yard skip

One of our most hired skips for small renovation projects, the 6 yard skip features a drop-down door for easy access if waste needs to be wheeled in. This skip is perfect for large building materials or a bulk of items and will fit comfortably into your driveway. We recommend this skip if you’re fully renovating a room, such as an entire kitchen refit.

8 yard skip

Known as the ‘builder’s skip’, this skip is the most popular in our range, and for good reason. It’s the perfect size for any DIY project at home and ideal for small commercial projects. There is no weight restriction, so you can load it up with heavier materials, and the drop-down door allows for hassle-free access. This 8 yard skip is ideal for waste from multiple rooms, large areas of land, or commercial job sites.

10 yard skip

If your new year plan involves getting rid of your old furniture, the 10 yard skip is a great choice. Whether a house clearance or small office refit, this skip will fit large waste with ease. Please bear in mind that this skip has a weight restriction, so the 8 yard is a better choice if you’re going to throw away heavy materials such as rubble.

12 yard skip

This is the biggest standard skip in our range, designed for full renovation projects and lightweight commercial waste. If you’re clearing out a lot of furniture or renovating multiple rooms or large areas, the 12 yard skip has the capacity for your waste materials. Please note that there is a weight restriction on this skip, so it cannot be used for rubble and heavy building materials, and there is no drop-down door. Due to its size, you’ll need a skip permit if you plan on sitting it on the road.

Roll-on skips

The largest skips we have to offer, you can choose from a 20 yard or 40 yard roll-on skip. These giants are designed for very large projects and commercial waste management on job sites. We’d recommend these skips for large-scale projects, such as gutting and renovating an entire building or a very large home renovation.

What can I put in the skip?

While we take most waste types, there are some things we can’t receive. If the waste set to be recycled is contaminated, we may need to charge you for the extra cost of processing those items.

If the waste that we receive is contaminated with a prohibited material, the whole skip becomes non recyclable, which is detrimental to the work we’re trying to do for environmental sustainability. We are a zero waste to landfill organisation, and we want to be able to continue our work in providing a better future through our environmental efforts.

Please do not put the following into our skips, or we may be unable to efficiently and safely sort through and recycle the collected waste:

  • Fridges and freezers
  • TV or computer monitors
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Mercury waste
  • Gas canisters
  • Tyres
  • Liquids (dried, solid paint is fine)
  • Items of dangerous reactions

The following waste cannot go into our standard skips, but we do receive them through specialist equipment that we can provide:

  • Asbestos – please contact us to discuss our asbestos disposal service.
  • Plasterboard – you can opt to add plasterboard bags at checkout to keep it separate from your other skip waste or contact us to discuss hiring a specialist plasterboard skip.

Environmental benefits

We are incredibly proud of the work we do to help improve our planet for future generations through our eco-friendly operations. When you choose PSH, a carbon-neutral business, you’re choosing an environmentally friendly way of disposing of your waste. We follow a strict zero-waste-to-landfill policy, with processes in place to recycle everything you put in your skip, all the way down to the dirt on your construction rubble.

If your New Year goals don’t include making more sustainable choices, then you’ll be doing it anyway by choosing PSH. Waste doesn’t have to end up at the dump or in landfill; with effort and motivation, waste can be broken down and recycled, reused, or even sent off to be used as energy in Europe.

Every time you hire a skip with us, we donate £1 to our Clean Up to Green Up scheme. We are working with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust to restore an area of land by Foxley Wood, helping to improve Norfolk’s woodland biodiversity. This benefits not only the environment and the local wildlife but also nearby communities. So far, our skip hires have raised over £21,700, helping to restore over 21,700 square metres of woodland.
