Norfolk Wildlife Trust Foxley Wood Community Day

24/10/2024

Did you know we work with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) to improve Norfolk’s woodland diversity? Along with the NWT team and the local community, we’ve been restoring arable farmland into Foxley Woods. This field, or enclave, was once a missing piece of the ancient Foxley woodlands, and we continue to proudly support the Norfolk Wildlife Trust in reestablishing the space.

With every skip hire, we donate £1 to the NWT to help them encourage rare wildlife back to Norfolk and reintroduce native plants to the woodland area.

On October 5th, the NWT hosted the Foxley Wood Community Day. This day was to celebrate the expansion of the woodland with guided walks, crafts and more. We were delighted to attend and see what our years of help have done for the woods.

The day’s events

We were fortunate to have beautiful weather for the event. It was the perfect autumn day complete with sun and fresh air, ideal for exploring the woodlands and learning about what the NWT are up to. The event was well attended by volunteers and the local community, with plenty of families and schoolchildren there to enjoy the day.

When we arrived, we headed to the enclave and were met by James from the NWT, who told us what to expect from the day. Next,we visited the NWT marquee, which was packed with activities, from educational games to mini beast hunting.

It was then time for a guided walk by Will from the NWT, who led two tours for the community that day. This was an exciting walk, as it led us through areas of the woods which are typically off-limits to the general public. He stopped us at various points to explain the history of Foxley, and how the work done by the trust helps conserve and maintain the woodlands. There is an incredible range of tree species in the woods, including oak, ash, fir, pine, and hawthorne.

Will showed his tour group the areas of the woods which are in different stages of growth from being coppiced. Coppicing is a traditional method used in woodland management, where trees are cut right down to the stump. This encourages the tree’s natural growth cycle, as it will then send new shoots up to survive.

Coppicing is a fantastic way to improve the biodiversity and health of an area, as it opens the space up to more sunlight and encourages a wider range of plants to thrive while new trees grow. The NWT typically does this to large areas to ensure there are enough new shoots after the local wildlife such as deer have had their fill.

We then headed back to the enclave, which has seen a vast change since we first embarked on the Foxley Wood partnership project back in 2022. Blackthorn is spread from within the woods into the field, and the previously planted oak saplings have reached 20cm in height. We’re hopeful that they’ll still be standing in 400 years to reach ‘ancient’ status. The ditch, dug by Simon from PSH, has started to hold water, which is great news for enhancing the biodiversity of the area. Over the enclave, we were lucky enough to spot buzzards and kestrels on the hunt.

A wonderful day was had by all who attended, including the children who revisited to check on the growth of the acorns they planted on a previous school trip.
